Sid turned a bright shade of red when Jal asked about him marrying Cassie. “Well, yeah actually. She doesn’t know yet. We are pretty young, but I really think she’s the girl for me. Ever since we met up at the Bristol Zoo last week we’ve been walking on sunshine. I’m gonna propose sometime during our Spanish holiday. Hopefully she won’t turn me down.”
Sid asked a few questions about Jal’s time at the music conservatory before turning the conversation topic to Chris. He wasn’t surprised that they hadn’t talked yet. Chris had only been back in town for a few days. In fact, Sid was meeting up with Chris later. He’d always found Jal and Chris to be a cute couple. It was a bit out of the blue, but cute nonetheless. Sid ordered a slice of cake for desert and offered to share it with Jal. “So, are you going to meet up with Chris any time soon?” he asked, right as the cake was sat down upon the table.
Jal almost spit coke at Sid’s face when he confirmed the obvious: He was asking Cassie to marry him. She smiled, excited, and happy for Cassie. Her friend always had issues with herself, and Sid was a nice change in her life. They were so good and perfect for each other.
“Sid! Geez! That’s awesome, really! And Spain, wow. I’m sure you’ll make her happier than ever. You guys belong together.” She was happy for them, but felt a little bit jelaous inside. Getting married was the ultimate proof of love between two people, at least it was to her eyes. She felt lonely for a second, and wondered; Would the love of her life ever ask her to marry him? Only time would tell. But when Sid asked her about Chris once again, she snapped out of her fantasy.
“I hope so. I miss him.” Suddenly, Jal felt a sick need to let it all out. Sighing, she did so. “I know us being.. together was a bit weird for most of the group.. Okay, everyone except Michelle. But looking back.. I think we were good.”

Michelle picked up her carry-on that she used on the plane ride back to Bristol, emptying whatever was left in it. She would use it to hold her clothes for when she went to Jal’s flat. She threw in a pair of sweatpants and a few tank-tops. She didn’t need to dress-up around Jal, they never cared how they looked around each other, they were best friends. She looked down at her bag of spliff and decided to throw it into her bag too, maybe Jal would smoke some with her. Jal usually refused to smoke, but would occasionally drink. maybe she changed as they went off their separate ways.
She picked up her flat keys and walked out, locking the door behind her. She walked everywhere in Bristol, getting to Jal’s in at least twenty minutes. Michelle knocked on the door of Jal’s flat, rubbing her hands together for warmth. It was always chilly at night in Bristol. She knocked louder then the last after a few moments passed, “Jal, open the door! It’s freezing out here!”
Jal was cooking lasagna and some sandwiches. The awful conservatory-roomate experience had at least taught her how to cook, and she was good at it. She’d even baked some brownies and bought sodas. This was a celebration: Her best friend, Michelle Richardson, was visiting her for the first time since they both left for college. And she was excited. They were very different and sometimes they had arguments, but isn’t that something all best friends do?
She was wearing a soft and comfty purple short, and an old black Eminem’s Tour t-shirt her brother Ace gave her as a gift. She hated rap, but the t-shirt was soft and comfortable. Appropiate for a relaxing night with her best friend.
She heard Michelle’s impacient knocks, screaming her name. She laughed, ran to the door, and opened it. She pulled Michelle inside and closed the door. “Fucking hell, it is freezing cold outside.” They looked at eachother for a second, and then they both smiled. “‘Chelle!” Jal hugged her best friend tight, she missed her like hell.
“That doesn’t sound all that boring.” Chris quipped back, buying a flat and car was something to brag about, he didn’t have a new flat and car. And a music conservatory and an emo roomate. It didn’t sound dull to him at all. It sounded like she was happy. Moving on from Bristol - doing what she loved.“Oh.” Chris shrugged, casually, but he knew she’d want the story; “Doctors said it was a bloody miracle. I think I was just lucky. Recovered, went to physical therapy, they had to make sure I was all cognitive or whatever. And I’ve been released onto the world.” He laughed, leaning back slightly in his chair.
“I gotta go and get checked up like every four to six months, but it ain’t bad at all.” He wanted to move on from the topic, speaking about his health always felt strange, like talking about it was going to make things get worse again; “So, did you like it? At the music conservatory?”
“I’m glad you’re better.” She doubted. I was so worried. I thought you were going to… She couldn’t even imagine it. What if Chris had actually died? What would she been doing right now? The thought just made the need to talk to him even bigger than it already was.
Jal sighed and started talking about the school she hated so much. “I hated it. I fucking did. The teachers were complete dickheads, and the students were superb and weird. Or maybe I was the weird one. Anyway, that wouldn’t change my mind. I still hate it. But I have to admit I learned a lot of things..” She smiled, excited, and looked into his eyes. ”.. and the principal got me a spot in England’s senior orchestra. Is for students or young musicans only, but they choose the best players in the country, so I suppose I’m one of them.” She grinned and then looked down. Shit, she talked about herself way too much, and she wanted to know about his life too.
“Chris, what about you? Still working? Living in your old flat?”

Sid grinned and locked his arm in hers, then lead her to an Italian restaurant in the mall’s food area. He paid for both his food and Jal’s and sat down to eat. Jal asked if he was going to Spain alone and his shook his head. “Nah mate, Cassie and I are going. She’s got a photography job and I’m just tagging along. I’ve actually got a big surprise in store for her once we get over there, ahah.” He ate rapidly, obviously starving. Sid’s stomach was a bottomless pit. He could eat for days and still be hungry. He thought of conversation topics and the first thing that came to mind was his beanie. “I washed my beanie for the first time in nine years the other day! It came out two colours brighter. So Jal, how’ve you been since we graduated Roundview? You still dating Chris?”
Walking together in the mall felt great. She missed feeling comfortable around people. They entered to an italian restaurant just like she’d asked him to, and Sid had already ordered some pasta and drinks.
Jal smiled when Sid told her about Cassie. “Cass? Fucking hell. So I’m guessing you’re still together, yeah? I miss her. I should ring her once you guys are back.” She grinned. “And what kind of surprise would that be? Are you marrying her or something? C’mon, we’re not old yet!” She laughed and drank some coke.
She gave Sid a surprised look when he told her about the beanie. “Are you kidding?! That is definetly the best thing you’ve ever done for yourself. I’ve been fine, thanks for the concern. Music conservatory.” She sighed and looked down for a second. “I.. I don’t know. We haven’t talked yet.”
